HORRIBLE Internet speeds with Xfinity, unable to solve with troubleshooting steps
Post Body

Hello, I am an Xfinity customer using the Xfi Gateway. The issue I am having is in regards to WiFi connection. I have taken many steps to troubleshoot this issue to no avail. I have even called Xfinity's customer support and did their troubleshooting steps as well, which solved nothing.

Last month I regularly received under 20mbps internet speed - more often than not, it dipped below 5mbps. Recently the problem has gotten worse. On the 2.4ghz connection I now receive speeds less than 1mbps regularly. I can circumvent the issue by using the 5.0ghz connection, which has speeds of 10-20mbps which is /useable/ but still abysmal considering that I pay for 100mbps. Unfortunately, the 5.0ghz connection is still just as reliable as the 2.4ghz connection, and will regularly disconnect or dip in speeds that are utterly unuseable.

My computer is brand new and has a great network card, but I troubleshooted the issue anyway with various devices. Here are the devices I used to troubleshoot and test internet speed:

  1. Desktop pc Windows 10 - Wifi
  2. iPhone 7 - Wifi
  3. Laptop computer Windows 7 - Wifi
  4. Desktop pc Windows 7 -Ethernet
  5. Laptop pc Windows 7 - Ethernet

The two PCs that are connected to Ethernet regularly receive speeds close to or even more than 100mbps, which is really good! The issue here is with the WiFi. Although I received an acceptable (~80% strength) connection from my desktop PC, I went ahead and placed my laptop computer in the same room and close to the gateway, and connected to the internet. The internet speeds were equally abysmal across all WiFi devices.

Now, I understand that with Wifi, you can expect a sizeable drop in internet speeds - you could receive 75% of what you would get from ethernet, or even 50% in less favorable circumstances. In fact, at my old house that I lived at a few months ago, I was getting very acceptable Wifi speeds from a similar plan and the hardware! The speeds were better than I would get at my parents house!

Now that me and my new roommates got our internet set up here under Xfinity, the internet speeds have just been TERRIBLE! I enjoy a good reliable connection for applications such as gaming, but the speeds I have been getting make that nearly impossible! It would take a really long and oddly placed ethernet cable for me to be able to connect the Gateway, but my 2 roommates are already connected to the ethernet so there's no port for me anyway.

I have tried many times like resetting the gateway, resetting my adapter/internet settings on my devices, resetting the gateway via the router control panel, attempting to change the network channel to a less congested channel. By the way, when we received the Gateway, I had access to controls like setting the network channel. After the Gateway got updated during a reboot, those features were no longer available. In order to access these features, I have to pay Xfinity for more expensive hardware to operate those controls. This is absurd!

Does anybody have any solution to this? We are considering switching, we would be interested in investing in our own router if that can solve the problem of the Xfi Gateway's unreliability. I'm not interested in buying more things from Xfinity - I'm more curious as to why I am getting much worse speeds at a different location despite having the same hardware and same plan. How is it that I'm paying more but we still keep receiving less?

Thanks to whoever is willing to read this wall of text!
