My family, with tot-in-tow, did some canvassing in Englewood this weekend, and we ran into another canvasser who we spoke with for a while. While a good hearted person, I do think she was a little shrewd. For example, she talked about doing things to keep Clinton supports from showing up, including not leaving a door-hanger if no one was home (as it was a risk they might be a Clinton supporter). Well, we had a lot of no-answers and we always left a door hanger. On a few instances we had people who showed up after we tried contact while walking back to our car proclaim "WOW BERNIE STOPPED BY!"
Honesty and Integrity are important to Bernie. While I won't offer a door hanger to someone who says they're supporting Clinton, I will thank them for participating in the caucus and depart graciously. If they ask "what's the caucus location" I will answer truthfully and honestly (I just won't give them the door hanger, or tell them to be there early). "7 PM, Englewood HS. Thanks again for participating in the Caucus and we appreciate your time" was our closing remark the handful of times we ran into a Clinton supporter who asked (which was rare).
Just don't be rude or condescending. I don't think anyone actively volunteering for the Bernie campaign should stoop to low tactics like giving misinformation or refusing to be neighborly. We want to win, but we want to win fair-and-square, and not by tactics of questionable integrity. I know some people are participating out of their local area, but this is where I reside, these are our neighbors. People I have to shop with at the grocery store, ya know.
