After researching multiple dogs, I think the Rough Collie may be the breed for me. I’ve heard they need intense exercise for at least an hour a day, need to be brush one a week and more twice in a season when they lose their winter coat and grow it in, and can be avid barkers. We (my SO and I) currently have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, whom I love very dearly and is very energetic; however, I am looking for a dog for just myself that would be a good companion dog. I love herding breeds but I was looking for one that was more laid back than say a BC or Australian Shepherd. I want something that would have no issue with more learning more complex tricks as training is one of my favorite things to do with a dog. It’s fun for both parties (usually when done correctly and in short bursts) and is mentally stimulating for the dog.
To help make sure this is the right breed for me I was looking for someone real world experience everyone has had with the breed, good and bad. I would love to hear about your routines with your collie, things that have helped you, ways you keep them stimulated, etc. Full disclosure we do live in an apartment, but we do often go out to parks for hours at a time for our corgi, as well as do indoor stuff to keep her busy and not bored, I am also looking for a bigger dog that we could take on hikes. If I’m being unrealistic in anyway or if you have any questions please let me know!
While this would be a companion dog for me three are three of us including a retired veteran, so there would always be someone home to take care of and love on the collie while I’m at work.
