Time capsules as coping mechanisms?
Post Body

So, sometimes I find it hard not to be overwhelmed and / or obsessed with the much sooner doom of our species than I thought was possible prior to reading about the accelerated mass die off of plankton earlier this year. So far I haven't really changed much about my lifestyle, still living my comfortable grind, planning to have debts paid off in 6 years or so... "just in case," maybe I'm over reacting, right? On the other hand, if I'm not over reacting, there really isn't much I or anybody else can do about it at this point. Perhaps I could find better ways to spend my final years, but "just in case." It's kind of a cognitive dissonance, I guess.

On the bright side, if I'm right to be more concerned about plankton die off than any of the many other reasons civilized collapse is inevitable, then at least it is probably one of the most merciful ways for it to happen (gradual suffocation as opposed to mass starvation and brutality.) It's impossible not to be sad for all of the impending doom and loss.

But that gets me to thinking. Are there some "productive" mourning methods being employed by the /r/collapse community? What about putting together time capsules for future intelligent species? (I am not convinced there will be many relatable species that survive a drastic long term oxygen deficiency, much less any humans.) Probably a long shot, and it won't really matter to us in the end whether anybody eventually discovers any of it or not... it just seems such a shame... all the beauty we've collectively created... gone?

What kinds of capsules would be most likely to survive? What would you put in them? I imagine some words of wisdom would be obvious, like "don't destroy the whole basis for your survival like we did," ala the Georgia stones, but also some favorite books or music or visual art. I kind of doubt anything electronic could survive the ages, but... hmm.

Tldr; anybody in the habit of planting time capsules for the very far off inheritors of the collapse?
