Operation Sunset, following Operation Crewcut and Operation Sunrise, is meant to be the last of Military Operations in Nyasaland.
Nyasaland has been in a State of Emergency since March of 1959, and the situation has not improved as much as Governor Armitage would have liked it to.
Already in Nyasaland are the Malawi Rifles of the Kings African Rifles, along with the RRR (Royal Rhodesia Regiment) Battalions No. 1 "A" Company, No. 2 "A" Company, and No. 4.
Using intelligence from the Special Branch of the Nyasaland Police, and the Nyasaland Police being reinforced by Sir Welensky with the British South Africa Police, and their own Special Branch, Operation Sunset is projected to be a massive success. It's aims are to arrest the leading figures of the Malawi Congress Party, and the Executive Council of Nyasaland has finally made the decision to ban it entirely. With this, it is hoped that order and calm will finally be restored in Nyasaland, ending the crisis as a whole.
The BSAP, supporting the Nyasaland Police will flood Blantyre and Lilongwe, with full military support. Battalion No. 1 "A Company" and Battalion No. 2 "A Company" of the RRR will proceed with Police into Blantyre, while Battalion No. 4 and the Malawi Rifles will proceed into Lilongwe. On the list of those to arrest for dissidence, terrorism, and violence in Nyasaland include figures such as Hastings Banda, Orton Chirwa, Aleke Banda, and S. Kamwendo, among others.
The operation is expected to last only a single week, and the Special Branches will do their best to isolate the leadership of the MCP so that they are unable to flee when the hammer finally falls upon them.
