With the increasing popularity of Porto as a port and as a center for cultural diversity, Lisbon and Porto must be linked by a strong highway system that also connects the various towns and cities in between the two cities. Portugal is authorizing the development of 1000 miles of highway roads, to be built and maintained over the next 5 years, with the cost estimate being ~$650,000,000 spread out over those 5 years, and with the benefit of this system being an decrease in transport time between the two cities, increasing trade and asset development in each place, and helping the port in Porto mature and develop. Otherwise, the highways will all be paved, and the speed limit will be set at 90kph throughout the system. Estimates say the project should complete by the end of 1959.
