Goal:

Construction of China's first nuclear reactor

DR QIAN WEICHANG has, at the request of the REPUBLIC OF CHINA, agreed to conduct high-energy nuclear research in partnership with other Chinese physicists and mathematicians in Shanghai. This request has been made with an implicit threat, but all participants seem willing and enthusiastic enough, especially given the resources provided to them in this time of scarcity. CHIANG CHING-KUO has provided effective direction for the project despite the interest of JUNTONG in operating the programme, and is rather more trusted and respected by the scientists than the weird almost anti-intellectualism of DAI LI.

This research will provide a basis for the leadership of China in atomic sciences and ensure that it is not left behind in the atomic world. At present it will primarily be constrained to theoretical designs primarily due to a lack of uranium, but we expect that in the near future this situation will be resolved one way or another, allowing us to actually build a nuclear reactor to conduct further experiments on.

Estimated time for completion, provided funding is made available, is approximately one year after the first discovery of a uranium source. The reactor will be a low-energy, graphite moderated design with the next iteration to be a high-power, 5MW one based on experience from the first one.

What will happen after that, well... that remains to be seen. But this almost certainly isn't the last that we're going to see of Chinese nuclear physics...
