ATHENS, GREECE (KINGDOM OF?)

1946

Izidor Cankar paced back and forth in his office at the Yugoslav embassy. He cautiously eyed the photograph of Marshal Tito on the wall. The sounds of chaos echoed on the street below. Near constant telegrams came in from Belgrade, and the secretaries at the embassy were at work overtime. He’d met with dozens of Yugoslav citizens hoping to flee the country in the days since the chaos started, and Cankar doubted that he had slept at all in that entire time.

He was so tired.

Occasionally the second phone in his office would ring, the one reserved for communications with the Greek government. Or a special telegram would arrive from the Greek government. Always the same damned requests. Air support. Weapons. The desperation. Izidor Cankar cursed that they had not taken the Yugoslav offers earlier…

He was so tired.

In regards to Yugoslav aid to Greece, Cankar had heard nothing from Belgrade. When he’d enquired, Stanoje Simić’s office always assured him that the matter was being handled by the Foreign Office directly in concert with representatives of the Greek embassy, but Cankar was worried.

He was so tired.

Izidor Cankar sat at the big chair in the corner of his office. He started to read a book from his shelf but stopped after a few lines. So tired. He thought of the last conversation he had had with Themistoklis Sofoulis. Sofoulis himself looked so tired. How could this octogenarian hope to handle what was to come? The damn old food, Cankar thought.

So tired.

Shortly after the gunfire started on the horizon, Izidor Cankar locked his office door. He sat again in the big chair. He opened a desk drawer and removed a small revolver. “I tried,” he thought, “I have done for the Greeks all I can. I cannot bear to see another Greek face, knowing that I tried to help them and couldn’t. Long live Yugoslavia. Death to fascism, freedom to the people.”

Izidor Cankar, Yugoslav Ambassador to Greece, former Ambassador to Argentina and Canada, former Minister of Culture, was found dead in his office of a single self-inflicted gunshot would. He was 60 years old.
