[8th September, 1949]
Following the inaugural elections to the Palestinian Constituent Assembly, negotiations were undertaken immediately to form the first government of Palestine, taking roughly a month to reach a consensus. Primary issues discussed in the Constituent Assembly while negotiating included topics such as neutrality in the ideological conflict between the Soviet Union and United States of America, economic policy, the immediate establishment of a constitution, and the return of the Jewish diaspora from abroad.
While Ben-Gurion's Mapai held a vast amount of seats, they did not hold a majority and ultimately would succeed in forming a government from a coalition of themselves, the Progressive Party led by Pinchas Rosen, and the Sephardim and Oriental Communities led by Bechor-Shalom Sheetrit giving them a total of 61 seats and a slight majority. Though this majority was... Tenuous to say the least, Ben-Gurion decided to move forward with this smaller coalition spurning the United Religious Movement, who would proceed to move into opposition with the Mapam led in the Assembly by Meir Ya'ari.
Thus, the First Government of Palestine would be comprised of the following ministers;
Person | Position | Party |
---|---|---|
David Ben-Gurion | Prime Minister & Minister of Defense | Mapai |
Dov Yosef | Minister of Agriculture & Minister of Rationing and Supply | Mapai |
Zalman Shazar | Minister of Education and Culture | Mapai |
Moshe Sharett | Minister of Foreign Affairs | Mapai |
Eliezer Kaplan | Minister of Finance & Minister of Trade and Industry | Mapai |
Avraham Granot | Minister of Health & Minister of Immigration & Minister of Internal Affairs | Progressive Party |
Pinchas Rosen | Minister of Justice | Progressive Party |
Golda Meir | Minister of Labour and Social Security | Mapai |
Bechor-Shalom Sheetrit | Minister of Police | Sephardim and Oriental Communities |
Amram Aburbeh | Minister of Religions and War Victims | Sephardim and Oriental Communities |
David Remez | Minister of Transportation | Mapai |
Yeshayahu Foerder | Minister of Welfare | Progressive Party |
Ultimately, this would be the government tasked not only with creating a constitution for the fledgling Palestinian state, but also protecting it from any discontent from the Arabs are clearly showing. just as well,this government would be tasked with returning much of the Jewish diaspora from abroad back home to Palestine, and much debate will be had about a potential Law of Return. With luck, hopefully the government can remain stable and strong.
