July 1948
In the aftermath of the King David bombing, the collapse of the Unified Jewish Resistance that had been formed amongst the colloquially-known "triumvirate" of Zionists paramilitaries and the Jewish Agency had not ended the on-going fight against the British by the more extremist members of the resistance. The Haganah had been ordered to not participate and to passively resist the violence that is ever present in Mandatory Palestine, but the Irgun and Lehi still see the British as the largest threat to a Jewish state in Palestine. The Irgun had struck multiple times within Mandatory Palestine, most notably with the Sergeant's Affair recently. Their size and their large caches of technologically advanced weaponry has made them a major threat within Palestine, as well as their connections to the more mainstream Haganah.
The Lehi, however, had taken a different approach. They had become more and more active throughout Europe in the aftermath of World War Two and the Holocaust. Some of their members had participated in the semi-organized groups that attempted to get revenge extrajudicially within Germany, and others maintained arms smuggling rings in Eastern Europe. Two members of Lehi would become the most infamous and gain significant notoriety in the aftermath of their attack in the United Kingdom.
Chaim Weizmann was born in the Pale within Imperial Russia before dedicating his life to chemistry and Zionism. He would become internationally known as one of the most ardent supporters of a Jewish state within Mandatory Palestine throughout the twentieth century. He spent decades advocating throughout his adopted home nation, the United Kingdom, as well as the United States. His professional and political careers would grow simultaneously as he worked for the British developing a number of incredibly important chemical processes for the British war effort in World War Two as well as becoming President of the World Zionist Organization. His influence within the war effort in the United Kingdom also helped secure his beliefs and opinions on the Zionist efforts in Palestine. This would cause great ire throughout the more extreme edges of the Zionist movement as Chaim was dedicated to the belief on non-violence and cooperation in the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. This would become publicized even more after Chaim's encounter with Betty Knouth and Yaakov Levstein, two other Zionists. These two had traveled into the United Kingdom while smuggling detonators, batteries, and a time fuse. They had then gathered three sticks of explosives from other Lehi connections within the United Kingdom where they had installed them secretly at his house. They had learned of Chaim's schedule since his return from his meetings in the United States and the UN, and blew up his house with multiple members of his family inside as well. The assassination came after Chaim's recent comments about the Irgun and Lehi's refusal to cooperate with the Jewish Agency in its denouncement of violence in Mandatory Palestine. The Lehi are also well-known for having split from the Irgun to maintain their anti-British sentiment, going as far as to ally with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during World War Two.
