CAF SPOTLIGHT
Nyasaland labourers are hard at work laying down new track on the anticipated fork to Nyasaland. This would eventually connect it to the rest of the CAF, first through one rail, and then through a thoroughly integrated rail system. Progress is fast on the first route, especially since it was chosen because of both centrality and geographical convenience, but the full network will take much longer. However, even a single rail route, perhaps finished by next year, will allow everyone in the existing Nyasa rail system to easily visit anyone in the rest of the CAF, greatly aiding economic integration and perhaps even a shared cultural identity in due time.
Curiously, several work crews have been spotted laying rails not westwards, but south-eastwards, towards the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. Pending official government comment, there seems to be some geopolitical considerations perhaps in extending the standard gauge rail network to the Portuguese colony, and thereby extending it to the port of Quellimane. Relatedly, leaked documents have shown the start of planning for a route eastwards of Southern Rhodesia, perhaps heading to the port city of Beira.
Meanwhile, progress initially connecting the Western portion of Northern Rhodesia remains steady.
