Post Body

The Kurdistan Autonomous Zone has finally been established under a new constitution and under the grace of the United Arab Republics. One of the main provisos for autonomy is holding fair and equal elections so that Kurdish voices may be heard. Although previously the main voice for the Kurds was the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) there has been many parties rising up with the announcement of elections.

List of Kurdish Political Parties

Name Ideology Political Position Colours

Yekîtiya Nîştimanî ya Kurdistanê‎ (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) Kurdish Nationalism, Secularism, Social Democracy Centre-Left Green
Yekgirtû (Islamic Front) Islamic Democracy, Kurdish Nationalism Right-Wing Black

Tevgera Ciwanen Welatparêzên Şoreşger (‎Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement) Maoism, Marxism-Leninism Far-Left Red

There is a vast new amount of parties that have built up since the announcing of the elections, many with their own Peshmerga forces that haven't been fully integrated into the central command yet. These elections will be an incredibly large affair with the Kurdish citizens voting not only for their members of parliament but also for the party that will gain the executive leadership. The members of parliament will be elected for five years and so will the Prime Minister, however the President will be elected for six years. The electioneering was fierce and many spoke of vote manipulation and threatening actions at the secret ballot, many of which were ran by Peshmerga forces allied to certain political parties.

Because no party got full majority there has been an alliance formed between the KDP and the PUK in order to keep the government from being controlled by the Far-Left. Because of this, the opposition has been formed by the KWP and the PRYM. The Prime Minister role was given to Mustafa Barzani of the KDP and Deputy was given to Ibrahim Ahmad of the PUK.

Presidential Elections

Name Percentage
Abd al-Karim Qasim (KDP) 33%
Jalal Talabani (PUK) 14%
Coban Ziad Agha (KWP) 46%

The winner of the Presidential Elections was Coban Ziad Agha from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, meaning the Presidential office will be led by a member of the Far-Left that the government had originally tried to prevent from entering. With the elections complete the Kurdistan Autonomous Zone has officially joined the world of democracy.
