In Iraqi Kurdistan there was a small force of 5000 Peshmerga under the control of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Barzani tribe which was largely decentralised and spread across the Kurdish area. The Kurdish people though need a guarantee of safety against oppression and thus the KDP has decided to expand the Peshmerga to ensure that if anyone wished to kill the Kurds again, they'd be able to stop it. As Turkish arms remained in Kurdish territory the KDP had enough weapons to fully fund a 10,000 strong Peshmerga force. A small scale recruitment process was announced among the Kurdish towns and villages with the goal to recruit an additional 5000 men to bring the Peshmerga to 10,000 strong. The recruitment process will be secretive and will require prospective recruits to participate in a test to determine their loyalty to Kurdistan and to the Barzani tribe. The forces will be made up of men aged from 17-50, leaving a large gap for as many recruits as possible. Once recruited they will be trained in guerrilla tactics as well as operational security so that authorities do not question the workings of the Peshmerga.
Women will also be recruited for the Peshmerga but not in combat roles, they'll be taking the role of medics, battle-camp workers, and the of carrying munitions and messages. Although women have requested to be on the front-lines and be trained in combat they've been refused multiple times by KDP officials and tribal elders.
With the new recruits in the Peshmerga the structure has been altered to include the influx of manpower. The recruitment should take at least a few months.
Peshmerga Structure
Force | Size | Commander | Affiliation |
---|---|---|---|
Barzani Brigade | 3000 | Mustafa Barzani | KDP/Barzani Tribe |
Hamidiye Warriors | 1500 | Sheikh Ubeydullah | KDP |
Mam Jalal Alliance | 1000 | Jalal Talabani | KDP/Talabani Tribe |
Melek Taus | 1000 | Awar Barzanji | KDP/Barzanji Tribe |
Heavenly Kingdom Army | 800 | Ahmed Barzani | KDP/Barzani Tribe |
Martyr Qazi Muhammad Force | 500 | Karza Şêrzad | KDP |
Mahabad Avengers | 500 | Zaky Sahibqran | Unaffiliated/Apolitical |
The White Flags | 500 | Assi al-Qawali | Islamist/Unaffiliated |
Peasant's and Worker's Alliance | 500 | Council Leadership | Leftist/KDP |
Imam Ali Brigade | 450 | Huseyin Ali | Shia Islamist/Unaffiliated |
Sinjar Peace Units | 200 | Sheikh Khairy Khedr | Yazidi/KDP |
Komalah | 50 | Council Leadership | Marxist/Unaffiliated |
The new structure is incredibly decentralised with some Peshmerga groups holding no affiliation to the KDP nor the Barzani tribe, instead loosely being aligned under the Peshmerga banner of Kurdish liberation. Unfortunately this has caused some Peshmerga groups to have conflicting ideologies such as Islamism or Marxism while the vast majority hold political views largely focused on Kurdish independence or autonomy. Although there are many different groups most of them stick under the guide of the KDP or the Barzani Tribe with some minor groups following their own tribal affiliations.
