Wallonia - February 10th, 1951
In response to the growing violence and insurrectionism in Wallonia, the Belgian Military, in cooperation with the Gendarmerie, announced today measures to shut down free intercity communication in the south of the country. In particular, major highways along the Mons - Charleroi - Liege corridor would be subjected to roadblocks. Intercity bus travel would be restricted, as would intercity rail travel. Major rail stations will now host military troops on an ongoing basis. In Brussels, measures taken to protect Palace Laeken would increase yet again, with tanks, armored cars, anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns on station outside the Palace at all times. The airport in Brussels would also featured increased security. The military warned air travelers they would be expected to submit to a search for weapons before boarding any flight leaving Belgium.
King Leopold applauded these measures, as did many in Flanders who are frustrated with a perceived lack of response by the government and military to the ongoing crisis.
