Spread throughout the Soviet Union, unbeknownst to any but a very select few, there were agricultural scientists hard at work. They had been tasked with repeating published studies and creating new ones testing old hypothesis that had been espoused by a man close to Stalin himself, Trofim Lysenko. These orders had come from Stalin himself to Sergei Kruglov, head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. There had always been whispers questioning the legitimacy of the man, especially as famines and crop yields continued to struggle to improve outside the benefits of the vast mechanization of agriculture spear headed by Comrade Stalin. But these were only whispers, and ones that did not reach Stalin for much time for the importance Lysenko had to the man both personally and as a symbol of the peasantry of the nation. But Stalin always, one way or another, found out about the whispers of the nation. And it was this that would all lead to MVD agents congregating, secretly, near the Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
They were keeping track of Lysenko's movements and schedule, and eventually they would begin to poison Lysenko's morning coffee. Ever so slightly, so that over a period of a few months he would begin to develop what was blamed on chronic sickness. Of course, this was only because the doctor was himself an agent of the MVD and was told what to say. Eventually, in August of 1947, Lysenko would not be seen at his usual workspace in the Academy of Sciences. After a series of calls and policemen arriving on the scene, it was discovered Lysenko had died of a heart attack in his home, a true tragedy to lose a comrade of such high importance. Of course, to those that knew, it was no heart attack that had done the man in. Reports were sent to Stalin directly of the success of the operation, and that the Revolution would continue to march ever forward in the aim of progress.
