Following reports of Communist Activity in Eastern India, the Indian government deployed additional forces 3 battalions from the Assam Rifles to assist in local police efforts in West Bengal. Their efforts have been mixed as the influx of manpower to the beleaguered West Bengalese police forces has somewhat stabilized the situation in West Bengal. Increased patrolling has happened Communist activity in the region, and this has - on paper at least - helped suppress unrest and discontent in the region. However, long term efforts aimed at pacifying the region have been minimal at best with the additional reforcements Assam Rifles having a hard time both trying to accumulate to their new deployment in the "non-tribal belt" region of West Bengal, and avoid their cover from getting blown. While some tracking of minor and a few moderate CPI-M figures have been successful, tracking of the leaders of the CPI-M has been impossible due to the risks associated with attempting such a feat.
Across Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, the small influx of forces Assam Rifles has not actively improved the situation on the ground and have only reduced the decline in security as the focus on West Bengal and Kolkata has made freed little of 3,000 men devoted to improve the security over all. As reports come in about the first wave of success in West Bengal and the slow deterioration in Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, a new report comes in from Orissa requesting further support as Communist activity in the region has sharply increased over the past few weeks. Reports of police patrols getting ambushed, murders of killing high profile citizens in the region with a focus on landlords and business owners, and raids on courthouses have begin to flood in. One report stands out among the rest, which details a successful nighttime surprise attack on the District Police Office in Srikakulam in which the depots were looted and some Communist and political prisoners were freed. Reinforcements from the other police stations in the area helped drive back the Communists and inflicted heavy losses on the Communist forces. Among the dead were a variety of weapons including spears, swords, bows and some pistols.
Small success in West Bengal for India, moderate success for the CPI-M in Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, increased Communist presence around Srikakulam.
