The UPA is on its last legs. It is time for the Soviet Union to extinguish the flames of Nazism in Ukraine for good. During the Great Patriotic War, the UPA carried out a horrific genocide of Poles in Western Ukraine in support of the Nazis. Since the end of the War, the USSR has successfully suppressed the rebels.
The turning point came in 1946 when 600,000 NKVD agents blockaded and destroyed the remnants of the UPA’s traditional force. Since than the UPA has waged an unsuccessful guerrilla war. According to an official report, “The largest UPA operations after 1946 were attacks of state farms.” By the summer of 1949 the UPA was left with only a handful of cadre sized units cowering in the most remote parts of Western Ukraine.
NKVD, and later MGB, units successfully broke the insurgency in quick order as well. The NKVD carried out numerous false flag attempts operations against the UPA. These operations were so successful the true nature of these attacks was not known for decades later. Combined with rapid reaction units, economic investment, and the real atrocities committed by the UPA, the support of the people was gained. According to one MVD major, “By 1948 ideologically we had the support of most of the population.”
Losses were so heavy for the UPA, that by September 1949 General Shuchewycz of the UPA was forced to deactivate the remaining organized unit. Since then MGB agents, who have replaced the NKVD, have been mopping up remain guerilla and launching raids against UPA leaders. Myron, head of UPA intelligence, was killed in 1948.
Today, March 5th, 1950, MGB forces launched a raid targeting UPA leader Roman Shukhevych. MGB agents had successful infiltrated the UPA since 1947, carrying out tens of thousands of clandestine missions against the UPA. Through this network, MGB agents discovered Shukhevych’s hideout in Bilohorshcha. According to the report, “His residence was surrounded by some 700 soldiers of Internal Troops.” A firefight ensured, the results of which are not yet clear.
