May is an important month in Argentina: it was on the 25th of May, 1810, that the Primera Junta assembled in Buenos Aires to declare the independence of the Argentine people from their oppressive Spanish overlords. May is the month that Argentina became a nation.
It is also the start of election season in this year of Our Lord 1951! Much has changed since the 1946 election: the victorious Labor Party, led by incumbent President Juan Peron, disbanded itself in 1947 and was replaced by Peron's own Justicialist Party (PJ)-composed of a spectrum-spanning membership ranging from Conservative Catholic Traditionalists to Nationalists to former members of the various juntas of the Infamous Decade to a wide variety of Argentine labor figures. Additionally, this shall be the first election in Argentine history with female voters, thanks to the 1947 Universal Suffrage Act and the 1949 Constitution.
Opposing the Justicialists is Ricardo Balbin's Radical Civic Union (UCR), long suffering following the overthrow of Hipolito Yrigoyen in 1930, the UCR has been one of the few still-standing pillars of Argentine politics in the tumultuous opening half of the 20th Century. Balbin himself is campaigning largely as a Big Tent Social Democrat focused on convincing the Argentine people that Peron's policies, particularly his usage of the 1949 Constitution, represent a clear and present danger to national civil liberties. Balbin spent much of the last year under house arrest after being suspected of assisting the May, 1950 student protests.
There are several other smaller parties: the National Democratic Party (referred to by most as the Conservative Party), one of the vestigial remains of the Infamous Decade's "Concordancia" Coalition government, and the Communist and Socialist Parties (much of whose membership has been absorbed by the Justicialists).
Initial predictions indicate only a slight contest as Peron commands an even bigger support base than he had in the last election, thanks largely to the success of his various social welfare and infrastructure programs. His campaign was dealt a heavy blow with Eva Peron's decision to step out of the public thanks to her cervical cancer, forcing President Peron to once again field incumbent Vice President Hortensio Quijano as his running mate.
The elections will take place in November of this year and the President wishes best of luck to his opponents.
