"It is the duty of the Republic of Argentina to approach the world in a manner which, at its core, seeks to promote peace, friendship, and brotherhood. To that end, we will continue to eagerly maintain our commitment to the United Nations. However, we are not interested in enslaving ourselves to the interests of other nations, nor to their conflicts. It is not in the interest of the Republic of Argentina, nor the Argentine people, to become caught in the whirlwind of global divides. To this end, we have, and shall continue to, refuse membership in any such global organization whose management is governed by the will or ideology of a single nation. Nor shall we, under any circumstance, enable ourselves to be enslaved to foreign capital."
The President's voice rings out, projected by the complex speaker and radio system webbing across the Plaza de Mayo. Today President Juan Domingo Peron, coming off his victorious reconstruction of the Argentine Constitution, has come forward to explain, to the whole of the world and to the people of Argentina, his hopes for the nation's foreign policy going forward.
In light of what some have seen as a deteriorating relationship with the United States, the 1946 recognition of the Soviet Union and subsequent opening of trade between the nations (in particular, Argentina continues to export large amounts of cattle to the USSR), and President Peron's domestic initiatives to take economic power out of the hands of foreign investors and industrialists and place it back in the hand of the people, the President has decided to finally articulate his precise plans for Argentine foreign policy, which have, until this point, remained somewhat nebulous aside from "Pursuing Argentina's best interests."
"It is the intention of this administration to, going forward, pursue a policy that shall guide Argentina along a Third Way: we shall not kowtow to the great powers of this new age-although this is not to say we shall shut ourselves off to the world, far from it. We shall, instead of supporting organizations like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, support the formation of uniquely Argentine and South American organizations. I believe it is Argentina's duty to step forward and, hand in hand with her cousins on the South American continent, formulate a strategy for our mutual growth and protection. I know we have among us a century of conflicts, of rivalries, of wars. However, I believe that now, in light of this changing world, it is our duty to strive together for a brighter future."
The thronging crowd, always cheerful to see the President who has brought them so much prosperity, cheers loudly.
