PHASE 1

Israel's airforce deploys in the south-east to initiate a bombing campaign in anticipation of army contact with the Arab Federation. While alarm is raised in the Federation's command, their airforce is outmanned and outgunned by Israel, and a brief battle for the skies ends in Israel's victory. A bombing campaign is expertly carried out on Jordanian airfields near the border, although while targeting Al-Aqaba ports, the Israelis are faced with heavy Iraqi fire from the Eilat fortress in Aqaba, costing them dearly.

LOSSES

  • Israel: 1 Mirage-3, 2 A-4 Skyhawk, 21 Super Mystere B2
  • Iraq: 4 FJ-4 Fury, 9 Grumman F6F Hellcat

PHASE 2

Iraq's 3rd and 4th Infantry Divisions and the 1st Armoured Division have readied an assault through the Jordan Valley, striking through the West Bank towards Jerusalem in a bid to take the city swiftly.

Federation Army's inexperience in organizing the logistics for conducting swift large-scale military operations through rough terrain prove to have a slowing effect on their advance. Thankfully, the distance to be covered to Jerusalem is minimal and only an initial Israeli defense line is met, which dissolves after a quick showdown. Iraqi commanders believe that Israel's forces are overspread with the potential threats from Southern Jordan in the shape of additional Federation as well as possible Saudi forces, from the south-western border with Egypt, and from the North where the danger of Syria and Lebanese Nasserites looms. A bold advance is ordered.

Reaching Jerusalem, Iraqi air-cover begins limited operations to first scout out (completed successfully) and begin light bombing runs on defenses in the eastern half of the city perimeter. Industrial and military areas are mapped out and Iraqi commanders prepare their forces for aerial strikes onto those areas. A plan is formed to take strategic points for debilitating enemy forces to the point of surrender, rather than focusing on total occupation. Following strikes on artillery locations within the city and air force covering the skies for the attack, the Army prods into the city in a blitz, taking several blocks for a staging ground within the city. While battalions move on to various separate operations to establish and expand the Division Group's perimeter, the central command structures are set up in a housing block, to be fortified.

The communication between Brigades within the city begins to experience the woes of urban combat, as inexperienced Iraqi higher command is bogged down by the waves of information and the small counter-strike operations carried out by the seemingly small Israeli forces stationed in the city, inside appartment complexes, tight structures and the unmappable cluster of streets. While a perimeter was followed at first, erratic attacks and ambushes throw off the Iraqi operation rhythm and cracks begin to appear.

Starting at 8 hours past entry to the city, the Israeli Air Force mounts a formidable counter-attack on the Iraqi air domination, supplied by nearby airfields in the west, whereas Iraqis have lost a large part of their air bases in Jordan. The Israeli technologically superior hardware and more experienced pilots prove to be tough to beat, removing Iraqi air cover from the city and quickly grinding the Army's advance within the city to a halt with ruthless bombing runs, disregarding rather severe civilian casualties.

Pushing back the Federation's aerial superiority zone further to the east, Israelis begin to have free reign over bombing logistical and command structures in addition to caved-in infantry units. Iraqi Armoured Division suffers greatly from their lack of AA capability. Smaller units of Israel's Army begin probing attack in various locations across the Federation's perimeter. Without intelligence on the size of Israel's forces in the city, the Iraqi commanders decide against a spread-out assault on the small units, fearing a breakthrough by any larger Israeli force, should the Iraqi perimeter be spread out or broken for the sake of changing formation and location.

Hence the Arabs fortify their positions and call for further orders from the Federation's command.

LOSSES

  • Israel: 3,000 Infantry, majority of Jerusalem's AA and long-range artillery capability, 12 Super Mystere B2, 2 Mirage 3
  • Iraq: 7,000 Infantry, 1,500 Armoured Infantry, 31 Centurions, 2 full Artillery regiments, 2 FJ-4 Fury, 6 Grumman F6F Hellcat, 5 A-1 Skyraider

PHASE 3

Immediately following the Israeli airstrikes, the Iraqi army begins a blitzing offensive through the Negev desert towards Beersheba, covering it all the way to Beersheba in the matter of a few hours, using the window of time while the IAF resupplies further in the north. Air cover accompanies the advance.

Just to the south of Beersheba however the IAF restores their command of airspace and executes a coordinated air-to-ground and long-distance artillery strike on the advancing Iraqi forces, grinding them down to a halt. That's followed by a strong attack by the Israeli ground forces. The Arabs manage to hold on for a few hours but are eventually forced on barely organized retreat, as a wing maneuver threatens to crush their left flank and halve Iraq's operational units. Lack of communication and morale within the Arab forces bogs down the retreat, even causing friendly fire in various points.

Reorganizing their positions further to the south after leaving behind 3 effective martyr battalions, the Iraqis set up a new defensive U-line, establishing light fortifications under the consistent harrassment probes by the IAF which are thwarted by Iraq's own AA and aerial capabilities.

Moving through the 3 battalions, the IDF strikes back at the Iraqi defense quickly, taking minor casualties and properly ruling out any chance of Iraq's advance further towards Beersheba. The latter are left to wait for Egyptian assistance who promised coordination with Iraq's command in terms of striking at Israel.

LOSSES

  • Israel: 5,000 Infantry, 12 M103A1, 16 AMX13, 75 APCs, 35 Artillery, 3 Mirage 3, 9 Super Mystere B2
  • Iraq: 16,000 Infantry, 3 Artillery regiments, 100 APCs, 14 Grumman Hellcats, 5 A-1 Skyraider, 2 Saab 18 Lightning

PHASE 4

Knowing the threats of the desert, the Egyptian logistics have prepared long and hard for Operation Badr, calculating everything possibly calculable and accounting for everything. Water supply, detailed movement plans for units, roads to be used, supply routes to be safeguarded. [A mystical 20/20 roll]

In a coordinated attack the massive Egyptian army strikes right into the Israelis, who have a majority of their communication and manpower in the area focused on the Arab advance from the east. A few hours of fierce tank battles are all the Egyptians need to break through in 3 different points and force the Israeli forces on a semi-organized retreat.

Chasing them through the Negev, the large force is split in two, a major part of it going on to save the Iraqi forces in the south-east from certain destruction, as the latter has been pummeled down to a immobile force of 4,000. A flanking maneuver on the Israelis themselves forces them on a fast-paced retreat northward with Egyptians right on their tail.

After 2 days of Egyptian Blitzkrieg and the frontline barely a few dozen miles south-west of Jerusalem, the Egyptian high command heeds their Logistics Staff Command advice and halts the advance in fear of causing severe issues in supplying the massive army in foreign territory at such speed. The Egyptian forces pull back, but doing so leave several security breaches in their line, allowing for airstrikes by the IAF to cause rather severe damage to the units driving the blade of the army formation. The Egyptians resort to a temporary line of fortifications along the line between Ashkelon-Rahat-Arad, extending bombing runs towards Jerusalem. Logistics estimate the resupply effort and make-up of new lines to take at least a week. Meanwhile, the Israeli forces form a line to the south-west of Jerusalem and ramp up attacks on the Iraqi Jerusalem expedition.

LOSSES

  • Israel: 5,000 Infantry, 7 M103A1, 21 M60A1, 28 AMX13, 16 Super Shermans, 120 APCs, 9 Mirage 3, 5 A4 Skyhawk.
  • Egypt: 11,000 Infantry, a mixture loss of 40 tanks, 150 APCs, 50 Artillery, 30 combat aircraft
