1953 was a tumultuous year in Italian politics. Following Democrazia Cristiana's announcement to establish new changes to Italian electoral law that would grant the coalition that wins an absolute majority of the vote obtains a supermajority in parliament. This was staunchly opposed by all the small parties and the governing opposition who believed that it would result in the consolidation of DC's power within government. Even small parties within the governing coalition opposed the move and shortly withdrew their support of the coalition. Despite the party's factionalism, DC stood united amongst their peers to seek the consolidation of government and achieve stability within parliament. This was Gasperi's last gambit for the future of Italy.
The Soviet Invasion of Yugoslavia was a shock to the Italian political establishment as it made clear that it did not matter what country it is, communist or not, If they do not obey the Soviet line, they will face the bayonets of the Red Army. While the security guarantees of the MTO were great, work was put forth towards the Italian Republic's entry into NATO and it's remilitarization program. Fear surrounding the nature of the PCI and the entry of Yugoslav political refugees in Trieste made the situation even more complicated, drawing DC closer to the Italian intelligence apparatus to help resolve things. SISM was thus tasked with monitoring the PCI, clamping down on Communist agitation across the country and provoking the Communists to act prematurely in order to justify curtailing their political influence and support. DC and the governing coalition thus launched a major non-stop propaganda campaign to push for political support to DC entrenching it's role as the bulwark against tyranny in Southern Europe and against Communist infiltration.
Nevertheless, the country had much to look forward to. The highly successful welfare and social reform programs of the Gasperi administration as well as the implementation of the social market economy model made great contributions to the rise of the Italian economy as a leading power world wide in manufacturing and trade. Jobs are plentiful, wealth is expanding and the conditions for the average folk improves as the post war boom grows. This strengthened the mandate of the ruling coalition which resulted in the consolidation of support amongst the country's voting base. The nationalist and assertive rhetoric of DC also won the support of the Italian conservative and hard right to weaken support for the burgeoning neo fascist MSI and the monarchist MNP.
