Sunan District, February 5th, 1950
With the initial success of the Sky-Road initiative, the next phase was announced today: the formation of KAO, a Korean civil airline intended to establish air service with friendly countries, as well as to provide additional training to Korean pilots and expand the pool of available pilots. To that end, the use of Li-2 cargo planes, in addition to the handful of Ki-34 VIP transports still serviceable in the north, was announced for the following routes:
- Pyongyang-Beijing, twice a week
- Pyongyang-Moscow, via Vladivostok, Irkutsk and Omsk, once a week
In addition, high-speed parcel services using a small number of disarmed Tu-2 bombers will be provided. These will serve to give bomber crews practicing in navigating and locating their targets, especially in unfamiliar and varying terrain. It is hoped that the civil air service may begin shortly, with expansion to follow in the years ahead as the Korean aviation sector expands.
