The ousting from government positions by Democrazia Cristiana has enraged much of the Italian left feeling betrayed at their erstwhile โalliesโ during the early years of the Provisional Government. PCI militants have grown exhausted over the attacks by Italian conservatives at their reputation, its image and their cadre. Wildcat strikes and reprisal assasinations towards police and conservative ministers have only inflamated tensions. Nevertheless General Secretary Palmiro Tolgatti remains steadfast in his commitment to a democratic victory at the polls rather than a violent revolution or putsch. With the PSI led by Pietro Nenni also removed, both parties have been in talks to negotiate an alliance to defeat DC in the incoming elections. Thus after months of discussion: the Popular Democratic Front was formed as a coalition contender against DC in parliament.
The decision shocked absolutely no one in Italy, both parties have significant overlapp in their policy positions and ambitions while Tolgatti and Nenni are both close friends. Nevertheless the consolidation of the left wing parties ushered in the next phase of the election. DC now has a singular and common enemy that has risen in size and will pursue any and all tricks in the book, no matter how vicious, to ensure the Communists do not get into government again. Their contacts with the Church unleashed a theological war with words against Communism decrying that Communism and socialism are anathema to the pious Italian culture and society. Decrying that Palmiro Tolgatti is an Italian Judas willing to sell the country out to Stalin (The Anti Christ) and the victory of the communists in the election will be the death of Italy itself and salvation will not come. The PDF on the other hand tried their best to maintain their optics as clean as possible, publishing an ambitious public works, employment, social and political reform manifesto, restraining the unions, building a support base of all working class people. Whoever wins, it may be the most decisive election in Italian history.
