This morning I was especially tired and managed one of those truly niche mental lapses suffered by someone in dire need of morning caffeine. Instead of putting my grounds in the empty French press and pouring my exactly 200°F water over them and waiting for 3-4 minutes, I forgot to put the coffee in the press. So when the water was heated in the kettle, I decided to pour the water into the empty press, add the freshly ground coffee after, and stirring with a spoon to ensure proper distribution. When completed, the coffee (I always have it black) was almost sweet, zero bitterness at all. Maybe one of the best cups of coffee I’ve ever had. Is this because I’ve been procedurally doing this incorrectly my whole life or is it just that my kettle set a couple of degrees too high for my coffee?
