Sustainability, Ethics v. Cost

Probably been discussed to death, so if this gets removed, I'm ok with it. Love me some coffee, but the business practices leave a bitter taste in my mouth. We are trying to make coffee at home more because of price, taste, etc, you know the spiel. I try to buy the best I can without breaking the bank and am curious what brands offer the best values, both economically and ethically.
