Cannot access postgres of my username; i have created user with my name; help

when i give.... psql -U my_username ; in terminal
psql: error: connection to server on socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432" failed: FATAL: database "my_username" does not exist
the above is the error.
please solve.. what should i do now...working on this for 2 days......
