So I’m 40. I grew up in the 90s listening to everything from indie, shoegaze, electronica, techno, alternative, punk, trip hop, rap metal, industrial, grunge, house, trance, rock, pop and rap/hip hop. I stopped keeping up with rap and hip hop somewhere around the time I started seeing all these kids running around with colored hair, piercings, face tattoos, baggy clothes or skinny jeans and Marilyn Manson shirts - basically ripping off everything from the 90s - but not even listening to any of the music they promoted on their t-shirts. Instead they listened to this new style of rap that I thought was the worst shit ever made. I don’t know what it’s called but I think it started out as SoundCloud rap and I’ve also heard it called drug rap, sad boy rap, and trap. At first I only heard stuff like Migos. I don’t know if that’s even in the same genre I’m talking about. Well being a drug addict, a depressed mf and just going through a break up of a relationship I was in for the past 8 years, I somehow discovered this song called “The best part of life” by Saint jhn. From there I discovered the entire world of Suiceboys - especially “1000 blunts”. Then stuff like “Gods Whisper” by Raury. “Mind runner” by Ty Brock. And “16 lines” by lil peep. I think I’ve been hooked, fallen in love and that this shit saved me. Now I need more. I know I’m on the late show. But can anyone lead me in the right direction to more of this type of stuff? All my friends are old like me and don’t know about none of this shit like “goth boi click” and juiceworld. Maybe Travis Scott or drake are part of this? Idk. Maybe kevin gates or Future? Xxxtentacion or post Malone? Idk. I just am so lost when it comes to all this so I don’t know. I stopped listening to rap when it was h town shit, icp, Eminem, ugk, and missy elliot. Lol I just know I love shit like the exact songs I listed. Looking for darker rap with a lot of singing and themes of dope, love, suicide and depression. I like the trippy lo fi shoegaze beats and sound. Does what I’m saying make any sense? Can someone help me? P.s. upon searching further, I’d like to add “fuck love” by Lund & “Revenge” or “Garetts Revenge” by Xxxtentacion to the list of songs of the type of music I’m talking about.
