Like I just don't get it. He's a career .236 hitter/.326 OBP with minimal pop. I'll admit compared to other catchers right now yea he's a little better than average I guess, but he's not worth the package they want. He finally had one actual good year last year and now we want to go all-in on him? Just doesn't make sense to me.
I mean honestly, I look at this stats and I see Yan Gomes or Perez in a good year. We sent both packing and/or complained about them as fans most of the time. I'd rather just roll the dice with Bo Naylor and see what we get. Our coaches did a great job last year with young players, who's to say they can't continue that work? Maybe pick up Gary Sanchez as the veteran to help him out.
Or let's stop the madness with Murphy and focus on two both equally better catchers that the Blue Jays have with Jansen and Kirk. I have no idea what their trade package would be but I can't imagine it's more than what the A's want and we'd get a better catcher in return IMO.
Edit: Throwing this in later/Emphasizing this since I guess it wasn't understood enough, "he's not worth the package they want." So I'm not saying Murphy is a bum or wouldn't be a good addition to the team, but once it came out what they were asking for from the Cardinals, all of this talk and posts about Murphy should have ceased. We aren't giving up a king's ransom just because catcher production is at a low right now in the MLB. You make due with what you have (Bo) and then find a veteran to help him along. I get that not everyone loves Sanchez because of his defensive liabilities, but he can likely be had for cheap too as a back-up. That being said, I can understand the hate on him.
