How to clean unwashable mattress cover?

Not crazy dirty. I was my sheets every week or two. Depending on how hot it gets and sweat wise. But over time the actaully mattress cover has gotten dirty. Nothing crazy but want to address it before it becomes to much. Actual mattress is clean. Just the cover. Tempted to put it in the washer on gentle. Would that mess it up anyway? 100% polyester it says.
