I had a middle class upbringing, and my parents instilled in me to always help clean the house.
As I've gotten older, I rarely see people who have the same thorough cleaning habits. The exceptions are doctors and designers. Women tend to be cleaner than men.
Even now, I live with some boys that are Big 4 management consultants, engineers at FAANG tech companies. And it's shocking some of the habits (or lack of) that I see.
Stuff like peeling onions and leaving skin on the floor. Or leaving sponges resting in the sink among food crumbs.
I always thought it was normal to clean up after yourself. But is it actually rare?
I grew up living with my grandparents, and my grandma couldn't get around very well, so our house was a mess all the time. Roaches and mice inside, big junk yard dogs outside, nothing we had was nice. Now I struggle keeping my house clean. It gets worse the older I get. We have no pests, but I'm always behind on the cleaning. It just seems like such a huge task, I have no idea where to start or how to keep it up.
It's just me and my 17 year old son, both of us with ADHD and it's hard. We try checklists and building routines and cleaning as you go and we tried different books and stuff, it ends up being we just don't see the mess if we are doing something else.
We just tried to put our Christmas tree away and found out a cat pooped in the box, so now the tree is on the living room on the floor until I get a new tree bag. At least the ornaments are put away though.
Send help haha

I'm sorry for your loss. And with your schedule there is no time to clean. I just wish it wasn't such a value judgement on us. I'm not a bad person because there are dishes in the sink and plates on the coffee table.
