Taking a stand against the Clash Royale team's recent, reckless decisions as a former player
Post Body

I sincerely apologize to those who hate reading extensive posts like this, but there is no concise way of constructing my thoughts here:

It is incredibly sad how the memorable and actually enjoyable past times of CR are being flushed down the drain for so many players. True corporate greed and desperation have been an evident and common theme with the developers of CR at this point, and it is extremely infuriating to see the game, one that I once cherished and enjoyed, spiral into a storm of constant outrage fueling the deliberately provocative actions and decisions behind the scenes, only to perpetuate over and over again. It is sickening. I know that this is not what Supercell stands for as a whole company, but the situation with the CR devs blatantly ignoring their community's feedback and disparaging all of their points and advice like bags of flaming garbage in order to make more cash-grab opportunities, is absolutely ridiculous.

Greed is one out of 7 cardinal sins that I probably disdain the most. It is the flame in my torch. Seeing the massive piles of evidence of them being thirsty for cash, ignoring feedback, and even going out of their way to say mere "data" are there rationale to insult their entire community, pissed me off far more than the time Frank from the Brawl Stars team announced they weren't fixing gears anytime soon last summer.

Speaking of Brawl Stars, after they announced their lack of plans with gear changes, the community (including some content creators like Kairos) was outraged. Some of their actions/responses weren't justified at all and were openly toxic, but overall, we still spoke out nevertheless. Less than 2 months after the whole "Frank ordeal", they announced they were going to fix the issues with gears, and even displayed a roadmap hinting their future plans to further improve upon progression. This was evident with their addition to a more refined, linear progression system (Starr Road), and after players and Kairos spoke out about the inconsistency of the resource amounts after the update, they rapidly fixed it. To even further favor the F2P players, they introduced their masteries system which provides a more than adequate amount of power points, credits, and gold. And recently, they added Starr Drops which addressed their community's concerns with excitement and dopamine rushes.

I know this post is supposed to mainly pertain to Clash Royale, but I do mention this game for a good reason. With this comparison in hand, and with the features the CR devs have added over the past few years, we can conclude that they simply don't learn from their mistakes, or even admit them anymore for that matter, unlike the BS devs. Clans Wars 2 over in Clash Royale territory was a huge flop, and they still did the bare minimum to address the community's concerns at the time with me have been hearing of players still complaining frequently prior to the March 2023 CR update. And with level 14 being added, players were more lenient due to Champions being included with the new level, but the new level still wasn't really necessary in the long run. That being because they eventually had to remove the ties binding Champions to the new level after intense backlash from the Slash Royale incident, also meaning the new level had no long term meaning and maxed players would be back to stagnating at 5 million gold for possible years on end. Again, this was a more forgivable mistake due to this being their first instance of adding a new level in over 5 years, but fast forward to present day, they seemed to entirely neglect those past consequences and shun the community's responses with history (mostly) repeating itself.

They did notify the player-base in advance to them adding level 15, but the community was clearly opposed to it. There have been countless players throughout the subreddits and other platforms, vehemently screeching out against the new level addition while aware of the consequences of level 14 a couple of years prior. But NOPE, the vehement soon shifted towards pure agitation and revolt, because the devs proceeded to recklessly add it anyways. I recall seeing screenshots of TV Royale premiere chats with players spamming, "WE DO NOT WANT LEVEL 15" or several messages somewhere along those lines. The controversy was quelled for a very brief while when they announced the levels wouldn't cost gold, but they soon realized not only would the same gold problems for maxed level players continue, but also the Normal to Elite Wild Card conversion rates were absolutely unreasonable. It was another blatant cash-grab on the developers' end. I know the community knows these things already, but 50,000 EWCs is over 4x the amount of common cards required to upgrade from level 1 to 14. I was in shock when I first saw this. I felt very tempted to hop online and scout for any potential controversies that may have arisen from that point on. And ultimately, my anticipations were correct: the audience reception was overwhelmingly negative. I don't want to sound like a journalist or show critic discussing the reception of the online series "Velma" or anything, but similar to that show, the content creators or representatives of the "audience" in this case, gagged and vomited right on the changes they were dismayed by. So much so that B-Rad, a typically passive and fun content creator, hops on to emphasize with his own words how pathetic and scummy their moves have been.

Soon, others join in on the act like Boss CR, Gratz, CWA, Morten, and even OJ to some extent, with a large portion of their "social player-base" on their side. For the record, I saw that the recent TV Royale that the dislike percentage topped roughly 80% which I found to also be interesting. This alone isn't such a convincing reason to suggest their current utter disdain for the Clash Royale team, but the overwhelming negative criticism and complaints coming from both the community and content creators, suggests that the developers were clearly in the wrong here.

They have already exacerbated the overwhelmingly negative image they've painted among themselves for the Pass Royale rework and Free Pass nerf, and they removed gems from Masteries and "compensated" by ripping the players off with a largely inadequate amount of gold for the amount of gems being replaced. Then, they flipped the bird on them again on top of the fact that they increased the price of the new gold PR, and added a whole new tier with more rewards locked behind an even more expensive paywall. Going back to the most recent update, shortly before I started typing this post, they did it yet again by announcing they were nerfing the Common, Rare, and Epic rarity EWC conversion rates and buffing Legendary and Champion rarities to make the Level 15 grind far more strenuous for F2P players and more favorable for those who are P2W. It doesn't take an individual with 200 IQ to crack down their motives.

It is blatantly obvious that these are desperate attempts for extra profit at the expense of the F2P player base, and there is no other logical explanation. Why must they continue to make terrible decisions in the manner that they are doing?! Are they being delusional at this point?! Are they so lost and out of touch with the community that they can no longer invest a single second into listening to player and CC feedback?! Is this really the brain-dead corporate mentality that they are aiming towards?! It takes a genius galaxy-brain levels of obliviousness and recklessness in order to try to cause this much irreparable damage to their game and player-base, and they are handling these issues extremely poorly. Scratch that, they don't seem to be "handling" the issues at all anymore. They are doing nothing more than watch their scarred and scathed game deteriorate and merely rely on "data" instead of listening to the spoken words of the other people who are most passionate about the game. If the developers don't address the demands of their players, their game simply cannot exist.

I know these things are quite obvious, but many people are coming forward about them quitting the game (not to assume that 100% of them are true), and if this trend continues, their game will die soon. They will lose money for as long as these anti-splurging movements ensue (if at all), and they will have to be forced to do something eventually unless they want players to turn their backs on them even longer. If the developers really are as passionate about their game as they claim to be, they should prove themselves and address/fix most if not all of the major concerns their players have. And most importantly, they need to deliver a well-developed apology to their community, and admit their wrongdoings (which they will most likely never do at this point). Most of the decisions from the developers throughout this year have been unacceptable in almost every shape and form imaginable.

The devs are the only ones who can appease the crowd here, and they are the only ones who can dig themselves out of the piles of rubble they have generated. If they aren't willing to do either of these things, then the future remains quite grim for the game and I would hate to see it crumble into more ruins than it already has. I'm very proud to be a more avid Brawl Stars community member and player, rather than witness the crossfire of this fight to save Clash Royale's future against their greedy team. I am very thankful that I now focus my free time and resources into a game which seems to greatly value their community and feedback, and to have game developers who actively enjoy engaging as much as they do with their audience in Brawl Stars. I stopped playing CR consistently in about late 2019 and have returned occasionally, but I have still followed along with the game's events here and there. I feel very awful that the Clash Royale community and their content creators have to keep dealing with these oblivious developers who are clearly lost in space due to their own intentional, faulty decisions. It is disheartening as a former player, and as a fan of Supercell games in general. Again, Supercell is a fantastic game company with so many innovative people working with them and with a bright future as a whole, and it doesn't seem fair to be writing what has been my longest Reddit text post yet. However, these things just have to be said if Clash Royale wants to even see the slightest glimpse of any more future success, and they must play their part too. Nothing will justify greed from a certain group of developers though, ever. I really do hope that they will eventually come forward to their community and reason with them with 100% honesty and candor one way or another. The passionate players in this community can never fully back down and forgive the developers until they can empathize with their concerned players and accept their actions of being unjust. I do wish the best of luck on both sides with resolving the current issues, and I certainly hope to see a change of heart from the devs on the Clash Royale team soon.
