Balance Proposal: Enchantability
Post Body

Please comment below why you feel either one way or the other

One major flaw I've always noted with vanilla Minecraft, is that once you acquire diamond armor and tools, there is literally no reason to ever use any other type. Yes, okay you might use a golden axe once or twice to pop a chest faster, but once you are at diamond tier there's no incentive to vary your equipment, unless you're doing so for aesthetics.

With this server the way it is, even the vanilla limitation of requiring additional diamonds to repair your top tier armor is done away with, leaving you with infinitely durable armor at the expense of emeralds.

I want to make clear, I'm not looking to remove the current repair system. Using emeralds to repair equipment is fine, what I am looking to suggest is that perhaps diamond need not always be the best material.

Diamond should, and must remain the best tier of equipment when unenchanted, however we should allow enchantments on other materials to shine, and give them a purpose of use.

In quite a few games there is a precident for strong armors interfearing with enchantments, and having light durable metals be heavily enchantable. Often players in light armor or no armor are able to benefit the most from protection based enchantments, I've felt Minecraft has always missed the mark with regards to this.

The suggestion in a nutshell is to limit the enchantability of Diamond to Protection 1 and Unbreaking 1, while raising the unbreaking level and protection level inversely based on armor value for each other material type, over and above vanilla values.

Here's a sheet I made to illustrate the concept using Unbreaking and Protection enchantments.

With tweaks similar to this, you would encourage players to vary their armor. Diamond armor would still benefit from the toughness attribute, but leather armor would gain additional use on the higher tech end as it gains enchantments.

I would also segregate different enchantment types to different materials, for instance limit the Thorns enchantment to a specific type of material.

I would also limit "enchantment stacking" (the practice of putting overlapping enchantments like Protection and Blast Protection) to materials like leather and gold.
