Horse Fall Damage Bug?

So, I've come across this weird bug while riding on my horse. Sometimes, when I take fall damage from, say, 3 or 4 blocks, it just INSTANTLY KILLS ME. This has happened to me three different times in the past two days. The first two times, I just thought I was being dumb and wasn't paying attention to my health, but the third time it happened, I was 100% sure I was at full health, or only missing one or two hearts. Has this happened to anyone else? It's possible it's just a bug in Minecraft, but I've never heard about it.
