Discussion on the legality and morality of using "excessive" punishment in cases where the criminal was aware before committing the crime that punishment would be extreme.
Post Body

This isn't in direct reference to a specific scenario but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this type of situation. An example would be signs surrounding a farm that warn of six months in the end if anyone griefs or steals from the farm, and then someone comes along and griefs or steals from the farm. My question is, is it fair for them to spend six months in the end for stealing a couple stacks of wheat?

My own opinion is that yes it is fair. I see no reason for the criminal to get away with less than what was made clear the punishment would be. They still chose to commit the crime.

There seem to be some differing opinions though and I'm wondering what your reasoning is.
