This is just a discussion which I hope could in the future be implemented. I have an idea of using a two portals to travel to two towns. Here is how it would work. Town X would build a portal using 14 obsidian and reinforce it with a group reinforcement. Town Y would build a Portal using 14 obsidian and reinforce it with the same group reinforcement as town X. The requirement to make the portals connect to each other would be that the reinforcement cost would have to be diamonds only. Stone and Iron reinforcement would not make the portal work. The only ones that can travel thru the portals are those that are added to the reinforcement group. If there were three portals made then the third one made would loop back to the first one made. So the travel would be portal one to portal two to portal three and then back to portal one. If you are not apart of the reinforcement group the portal wouldn't work, you would just stand in the portal and not be transported to the other portal. Each town would have a hall of portals where some cities would have maybe one portal to large halls with 10 portals. I thought of this idea for defensive purposes and delivery purposes. If your city is being attacked by 15 people and your town has only a few folks in the town at the moment, allies and citizens that are away from the city can travel to the city to protect it. At the current travel levels traveling 2000 blocks would take about 5 min or more to respond. that is plenty of time for a city to be griefed or the town folks pearled or robbed. As for the delivery aspect traveling 10k blocks to deliver pearls, diamonds, or even slime can be a dangerous one. Large mountains, large oceans, hunger and even the occasional robbers could result in death and a loss of products and payment. I thought this idea was a secure way for citizens to travel. it would improve relations thru defense and business. Once again this is only a discussion and I would like to know if there is any pro's and con's to this type of travel.
