The Purge
Post Body

Burgher Limoen looked out the window, and watched as his city burned. All he could wonder was how this could have happened, and how he was unable to see what was clearly before him. For a man who prided himself on being able to see how burghers and businessmen would react to events in motion, he was ashamed to think he was unable to see this.

Port Aurora had been marched upon by fanatics. It was being purged.

He felt sorry for the poor souls who didn’t have the luxury of secure housing like Limoen. He felt sorrier for the poor souls that Limoen put out of the street with them.

Limoen wasn’t a religious man. Yes, he had assumed like many others, that there was a god, and perhaps it was a great golden elephant in the sky named Achintya. But Limoen was more than happy for Achintya to stay out of his business, or something. He hadn’t minded much when Carnatak came in, or when Glaunism resurged in Dawn. His business was gold and profits, not God and prophets. How he regretted not taking action sooner.

He had watched the Sarangatak festival happen right before his eyes. He got a report from the Constabulary, and then another, and then another as it scrambled to act. The streets flowed red with the blood of people that day – ne’er-do-wells and crooks all of them, and animal sacrifices without end. But Burgher Limoen closed his eyes and ignored the smell. Life could go on.

He watched as Glaunism enflamed, enflamed, and enflamed. There was no matter, he thought then, as he thought it was an issue for Verlichten and Leichstadt, not one for Port Aurora. Burgher Herrbrach of Verlichten could take care of it. But now Herrbrach had relinquished Burghership to Grand Friar Vagt, and the Grand Friar was at the helm of the army purging Port Aurora of anything and anyone who abided by Carnatak.

He even watched and did nothing when the Glaunist Orthodoxy built their Castle-Churches, the Gottmauers. He’d even funded them, hoping that the coin would be spent on the Basilicas and Monasteries and Libraries. The good works, perhaps even to absolve Limoen’s soul. Perhaps it did, and that was the only thing that kept the purgers from purging Limoen.

For now.

Limoen watched the docks. He could see some of the Carnatak-worshippers being thrown into the harbor, hands bound with heavy irons. He could see the little figures drown. Most of them had no part in the abhorrent Sarangatak. But all of them were damned regardless.

Just like I will be soon. Limoen thought.

Limoen was through watching. Port Aurora had had its run of ill fate, and so had Limoen. It was time for action.

Burgher Limoen wheeled his chair from his window, and put pen to paper once more. Arrangements, to make for Castle Eltzburg at once. Arrangements, to call the Sovereign Diet for an emergency meeting. Arrangements, to hire mercenaries from afar. A Letter to his bankers, a letter to financiers he could trust, a letter to Captain van der Golven, a letter to anyone who could help.

Limoen would take back Port Aurora. And he would make it the greatest city in the world.

This occurs in like 815 I guess.

Anyone want to send me mercenaries? I'll pay!

Also [M]: A lot of people die in Port Aurora.
