Remus was wearing one of his favorite expressions, a heavily furrowed brow. It was very useful for dealing with the bureaucracy, his aides, and especially the Senate, as it made him appear contemplative, when in reality he was bored or annoyed. This, however, was that rare circumstance when Remus was furrowing his brow in actual confusion. Winton, a foreigner, and Remus's loyal science advisor, was eagerly explaining some 'great new discovery'. So great was Winton's enthusiasm that he had lapsed into a very high rate of speech, and Remus could hardly understand a word.
"WINTON!" he barked. The advisor trailed off and looked at Remus, startled. "Yes, Consul?"
"If you do not mind, could you begin your presentation from the beginning? And do try to keep it beneath 40 phrases per minute." Winton turned a tinge of red "Of course, of course! I'll make it short, sorry Consul. But you must understand, this is one of the most ingenious discoveries ever to be made in Rema!"
Remus raised an eyebrow. "Do remember that our state has invented vessels which travel the seas, intricate written language, and complex arithmetic. This had better be some discovery."
Winton was unabashed. "Oh but it is, Consul! I've wanted to share this for some time, but I waited until we finalized the maths! Do you recall how we applied our best researchers to the problem of projectile motion?"
"I do. Continue?"
"Very well, Consul. Observe." Winton grabbed a scroll from Remus's desk, and dropped it. It hit the floor, and rolled under Remus's desk. "What did the scroll just do?"
"It fell, of course. But are you going to reach a point?"
"Of course! We know that all objects have an attraction to earth; this has always been a fact. As such, we have completely overlooked it! If I were to point a bow straight at a distant man, would he be struck by the arrow?" Winton looked at Remus expectantly.
Remus rolled his eyes. "No, it would not."
"Exactly! It would hit the ground first. One must aim up. But it takes an archer much failure before he learns at what angle frem the ground to aim. What if I told you we have solved this problem!" Winton proudly unfurled a scroll, covered in sprawling characters in what Remus could recognize as math, or at least what may have been math at some point in its existence. What he saw now was a tortured mess of calculation and indecipherable scribbling. "Mind telling me what I'm looking at, Winton?"
"Not at all! These equations detail exactly how objects move. How fast they go, how quickly they slow, why arrows fall over time! With these equations we can make more efficient ships, carts, cranes..."
"Weapons" interjected Remus
"Those as well! It is truly revalutionary! We have glimpsed the very fabric of reality, come closer to the metaphysical perfect form! It is a triumph of philosophy!"
"And what do you call this new math of yours?"
"Well, the aspects are many: Mass, Velocity, Displacement, and Gravity. Together we have taken to calling these equations the Physical and Natural Philosophy!"
"Would 'Physics' not be a shorter name?" said Remus.
Winton looked thoughtful for a second, which by his energetic standards was an eternity of contemplation. "Indeed it is! Now, do I have your leave to spread word of the Physics to our siege engineers and sicentists?"
"Of course, of course. Keep me apprised of all that comes of this discovery." Winton walked swiftly for the door, only for Remus to halt him by saying "Oh, and one final thing: send a letter to the Violet Fate Sect. I feel they may take a similar interest in this discovery." Winton nodded once, then hurried from the room.
Effect: Rema has discovered Physics! The technology will be traded to the Violet Fate Sect.
