Going through the Moderation Queue I have come across some flair titles that have no reason to exist, calling into question whoever activated "Allow users to set their own flair".
Flair that does not follow one of these rules will be removed:
- IGN (in-game name must be verified)
- an official admin/moderator role e.g., Community Manager
- IGP (in-game profession)
- IGT (in-game title must be verified)
- Only one flair category per account
It has become a bit obnoxious as a moderator to frequently see individuals abusing this privilege, so I am removing it for all casual users, who aren't white-listed formally or informally known to the moderation staff.
Why is it obnoxious? It has been used to confuse, belie and belittle the sense of professionalism with spurious irreverence. Thus the purpose of flair becomes invalid and void of meaning. For people that role play, flair should be apart of their toolkit. Flair is supposed to help people navigate this world we're creating; it exemplifies your role as a leader and purveyor of content/services in the game environment. If you aren't white-listed in some fashion, then you've no reason to have this privilege and prestige of standing out amongst the noise. It all comes down roleplay in the end, something that Origins as a server tries to support, as it is very central to what makes a CIV server work. Most of the categories I included were what players, using the system, generally were doing. I am just making this format more legitimate by standardizing it formally.
For example, if you're a public figure or representative, then it will probably be best that you include your IGN as your account name and IGT as your flair, so as to free an additional category for your flair.
From this point on, if you wish to have flair, then you'll need to see a moderator for approval. Anything you include outside of profession must be sourced and verifiable as true. This service, as being provided by the moderation staff, can be used to start building a compendium of persons for the public record, should they wish. People who are not white-listed will remain anonymous; they don't need to provide IGN. This is just a service in of itself to that end.
Novice players are easily pitted against their better natures, because of their ignorance to the geopolitics of the server. When players come to this sub-reddit flair is useful for them, as it helps them navigate the world. So by this act I am hoping to legitimize the use of flair, so that it engenders an impartial environment from the start. This would then allow for the creation of an unbiased, player-led sense of professionalism, enabling players to make smarter choices when dealing with others politically or publicly.
If you wish to list your IGN as well as another flair category your best option is to create an account that also include your IGN so as to be instantly recognizable to players coming to this sub-reddit. If you play CivRealms, get used to using your IGN as your account name. Make sure you take the proper precautions to secure your account as well.
Update:
I am taking /u/prawny331 's lead on this. Please use this thread to make a declaration of intent to use the flair system in order to white list any part of your in-game character to this sub-reddit, so that moderators can work with you independently as their time allows. A moderator once they verify you will reply to your post, closing the case on this thread. Please expect message correspondence in private, outside of this thread. Any post that disregards the purpose of this thread will be removed.
I am being pressured a bit as being too extreme, but I say to all you that is a bit naive considering what I was seeing. I don't need to seek permission from everyone before I make authoritative decisions, that's apart of my role. I still think the idea has merit nonetheless. A compromise of creating custom icons for the admin team has potential, and if you have the appropriate CSS knowledge to make it so please contact the admin team in modmail to make a proposal. Similarly, if you are good at making icons and sprites that we could use for flair talk to us. The stance of flair as a role play device was what the majority of people were using it as in the first place, for the record.
