Billboards are back.
Post Body

Introduction

Those among you who have played CivRealms 2.0 may remember that many years back I invented "billboards" that used characters on signs to make "mega-signs", a great alternative to using banner letters.

They were rough and primitive, however, and only found limited use-cases. Then, 1.18 came and updated the way Minecraft handles text, completely breaking them anyways.

Now that I'm back in CivMC, I've teamed up with /u/Two_Legged_Milipede, the legendary Maesters member and book artist, to port Minecraft Billboards to 1.18 with multiple brand-new features.

Not only is the traditional one-letter-per-sign billboard alphabet back with many improvements, but Milipede has designed an entire double-character-per-sign alphabet to make very pretty, condensed billboards.

Augustan United Imports

An Arabic corner store

A billboard advertising the nearby CivMall

QUASAR shopping center

Tower 439 and BUNKR apartments, with a sign advertising XP sales

Newfriend apartments

Let me guess, I have to pay you to install these signs?

No! It's completely free and easy to use. Milipede and I want everyone to be able to use Minecraft billboards as a better, more condensed and clearer-to-read alternative to banner-letter signs.

To that end, have spent hours creating a Google Sheets spreadsheet that has a couple of dropdown menus to let you generate sign on a text:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZIqBGXDhuvQ8WxXta5bftM8bRDJ6vxEgMFtiV2h8Nqk

  1. Fill in the dropdown menus for category, sub-category, and character(s). Remember, Milipede's work fits two characters per sign (one of those characters can be a [BLANK]).
  2. When the sign is generated below (it may look wonky in your browser), simply select the first cell of the sign by clicking on it, and then copy it, and paste it directly into your Minecraft client. Then move down one cell and repeat for all four cells. You MUST paste cells in line-by-line, trying to copy the whole sign at once won't work

That's all you have to do! Anyone can use the spreadsheet to copy paste the data into their Minecraft clients and make beautiful billboards like these.

A special thanks to

Milipede, of course, for designing hyper-accurate letters and characters and contributing to the project.
