It is from their foes, not their friends, that cities learn the lesson of building high walls
Post Body

Baalshillek, as was customary for married men, had over the years of his marriage slept with his wife many times, and sired many fine children. The most important of those children, as was tradition, was his eldest son. As a wise, well-read, creative, and most of all humble man, Baalshillek had given his eldest son the name Baalshillek II. And although Baalshillek II was intended for the same martial life that the elder Baalshillek had led and was continuing to lead, the ways of warfare had begun to shift, and with it, so would Baalshillek II's education.

Walls, keeps, forts, and other defensive structures were popping up all over the place, making it nearly impossible to gain victory solely with traditional, honourable field tactics. These new obstacles of war needed a new breed of warrior to overcome, so as he aged into early adulthood, Baalshillek used some of his wife's bountiful assets to enroll his son in Carthage's top technical school. There Baalshillek II learnt of architecture and civil engineering, as one cannot destroy walls without first knowing how they are built and how they stay up. He learnt digging and excavation techniques, as bypassing walls by digging under them is often far easier by attacking the walls head-on. He learnt of river flow, irrigation, and wells, as a fortified city's water supply is one of its biggest weaknesses, and infiltrating or sabotaging that is a sure-fire way to end a siege early. And of course, he learnt the old disciplines of leadership, tactics, contingency planning, personal combat, survival skills, and so on, as even a new breed of warrior must still be a warrior.

After several years of getting knowledge dropped on him, Baalshillek II, now old enough to hold his first military command, was the first of a new breed of educated and cunning warriors, trained and bred for the battles of the future.
