The Touch of Sakerti
Post Body

A man dressed in garb unfamiliar to the people of Shang enters the room, unaware of local ways, and yet careful and calculating on every step, making sure to go as far as possible, while making sure to not go too far. Confidence in his moves, he bowes briefly, and starts talking immediately, as if in a hurry.

"Most respectful greetings, leaders of Shang. I am here to represent the nation of Sumer, and to bring knowledge and to take knowledge home with me. The nation of Sumer is that of belief and knowledge - residing close to the Sinai, our connection to otherworldly beings has always been strong, and yet our people have been filled with curiosity and bravery, intent on finding out the truth behind rumors and beliefs that do not fit into this world. I bring with me many gifts, including wine from Ur and incense from Eridu, but also the knowledge our people have discovered in their great hunt for the truth that lies behind the Darkness. Should you accept these gifts, will Sumer be informed of the humility that is apparent of you even as your nation greatly overshadows ours in greatness."

The Shang minister rose to her feet, and bowed respectfully to this... Sumerian. She looked at this envoy with nonplussed intent. He had no reverence for the gods, but he did give an intriguing offer.

"Greetings, White Tiger Envoy. I do not know where this Sigh-nigh is, but it must be quite far. Your offerings are acceptable, and you are, of course, invited to try to fruits of our lands. But tell me of this truth you promise. We have truth ourselves, that we read from the charred bones that have never been wrong. The Ascended Fathers send us our answers, but we have begun to study these concepts your lands are famed even here for. Could you please elaborate on the secrets of this... sakerti?", she said.

A slight smirk appears on the man's face, but it disappears quickly. "Ah, yes. In all its simplicity, Sakerti is a number that is always the same in every circle, even as the circle changes its size. A ratio of its proportions. As you divide the circumference of a circle with its divider, you always come to the same conclusion - no matter what. Sakerti is always present. Every time, in every circle. Would you like to see?"

Not waiting for an answer, the man pulls a small piece of parchment out of his pocket, already filled with a circle and scribblings. Then the man suddenly looks up from the paper at the Shang Minister, as if he had made a mistake.

"My apologies, I stupidly assumed you would be able to understand our language. Allow me to explain with this picture." The picture details a circle divided in two, and symbols of the Sumerian language. "As you can see and as I explained, the circle is divided in two by what is quite naturally called the divider. Now, as we match the lengths of the circumference and the divider, we see that the circumference is a bit more than three times the length of the divider. And that is Sakerti, it's numerical value being approximately 3,14. Our mathematicians have tried to reach a more accurate value, as it seems to continue from there, but no success so far."

I see, I see. Very clever, westerner. But what if we split this bisector in two?" the Wood minister responded by drawing an orthogonal line through the diameter. "Will this bisector of bisectors also be equal?"

"Yes, the ratio between a bisector and the circumference is naturally Sakerti times 2."

"But what about the distance between the two bisectors? Is that also a Sakerti?"

"This is...hmm." A contemplating look crept on the man's face, as he picked a pen from his pocket. "So this line..."

The man drew a line between the ends of two bisectors on the circumference, forming a shape with three corners. A slightly disappointed look appeared on his face. "I apologize, I do not actually know."

"hmm..." said the Shang Minister. She drew a three-cornered shape with a square angle for herself to look at. "I know how we can solve this problem."

The Sumerian and the Shang woman looked out from the balcony as the slaves arranged their chains into a 'tri-angular' form.

"There must be some way to determine this,” said Li Mei, β€œWhat if we brought more slaves?"

"Yes, that should work...in fact, bring plenty of slaves. Who knows what we could find here?" asked the Sumerian.

"We just got some from Lhasa, let us see here..."

It was a damn mess.

They shackled the slaves together at near random, making a large tangle of bronze chains across the yard. Li Mei's men ran frantically shackling one slave to another while the two envoys looked over this cluster.

"Not to insult your slaves, but there must be a better way of doing this. A more efficient way. Right now, it is just a terrible mess." Bringing up a paper again, he tried to make some sense of the situation.

"When the sides next to the square angle are equal...hmm, no. If the other one is 3, and the other one is a 4, then the longer side opposite to the square angle is 5. So the longer side is...not the two other sides combined, nor is it them multiplied with each other. Them multiplied with each other and then doubled...what am I even talking about? I apologize, I must be tired."

"Perhaps if we multiplied them by themselves? Perhaps..." The Shang Minister jotted some things down. "No, that's impossible!"

"So if we multiply 3 with itself, and 4 with itself, we get...25. But that isn't-" The man's face lit like he had come up with something. A slight smirk. "5 multiplied with itself is also 25! This is - this is amazing! Ahem, I, I apologize for my excitement."

"Is... is this the Sakerti? A Sakertian Theorem?”

"We have done the work of great people here."
