The Death of a Nation
Post Body

On the eightieth day, the shelling stopped.

The war had been going so well just a couple weeks ago. They had made great strides to the south, capturing enemy strongholds. They'd even dared to strike at the heart of their foe itself. With superior arms, and Bulgarian valor, the Ottoman Sultan would have died in a few weeks.

But that's not what happened.

The war turned around. The Turks rallied, and were now driven by burning Ottoman Nationalism and cold British Steel. No matter, the Bulgarians had the highlands, and the woodland territory favored them. The Turks would crumble under pressure, they knew for sure.

But that's not what happened.

The Ottoman Air Force got off the ground, and they were good. Trained by the British, and madder than a bat out of hell. Bulgarians took down many of their opponents, but the bomber got through in the end. Sofia was threatened for the first time. No matter, they'll simply mend relations with Austria-Hungary or Russia, and get more forces from them. The Ottoman Menace will be driven back within a year.

But that's not what happened.

Turkish Artillery was rolled into place. The Romanians rose up after the Vampiric Edict. Arms were stolen, and the Bulgarian Army was facing a Guerrilla war as well as a Trench war. Morale was low, and the bombing was without end. The Austrians would not help, and the Russians were closer to the Turks. But as soon as they could get the Romanians in line, they could evict the Ottomans from their land once and for all!

But that's not what happened.

Skopje had been retaken. The Army was falling back. The Ottomans had used their superior fleet to land an army along the Romanian Coast, and now were sieging Bucharest. There was no hope to defend it, and the Bulgarians rallied their forces to defend Sofia. But there was still hope - Bulgarian Valor would ignite in defence of the homeland, and Serbia was sure to aid them against the Ottomans. If they could build support in Sparta, they could force the Sultan to the negotiating table.

But that's not what happened.

The Sacking of Sofia had begun. It had been eighty days since the siege started. Their defences were in debris, and the Ottoman Artillery stopped. Ottoman Infantrymen flooded the streets of Sofia. Bucharest was retaken and "liberated," but an Ottoman Puppet was their new king. Serbia stayed out. The attempted coup in Sparta was crushed before it ever got off the ground. Desertion was high. The Army must still resist. It had to.

But that's not what happened.

The Capital Building was being stormed. Turkish Forces had overwhelmed them. Tomya had died fighting when his rifle jammed, twelve Ottoman Corpses around him. The Bulgarian leader looked at his pistol. There's no hope of escape. His state lay bleeding, and he could allow himself to be captured and tried before Ottoman Tribunal.

One last shot rung out in the Bulgarian Capital. Capture was not what happened.
