For New Citizens: An explanation of the way Parliament elections work in Aytos
Post Body

"List PR"

The previous Aytos constitution required Parliament to be elected by the "Party-List Proportional Representation Method" (abbreviated as "list PR"). So here for you is a rather bizarre, short youtube video explaining "list PR".

Minor problems of list PR, and what we do about them

The video mentions the two disadvantages of list PR: "local interests" are not well represented, and there is no way to vote for a favorite individual candidate who ranks low on a party list.

The first problem doesn't really apply to Aytos, because we are small enough that everyone is fairly "local", even though we treat our whole city as one constituency. We fixed the second problem a little bit by having only 4 out of 5 seats decided by list PR, and letting the last seat be decided by a "normal" election where people vote for a favorite candidate.

Form, join or support a Party!

The important thing to take away from all this is, it's hard to get into Aytos Parliament unless you form a party and that party gets close to 1/4 of the vote. (The only other option is to be the most popular individual candidate in Aytos).

But the good news is: if you have interests that are shared by 1/4 of the city or more, it's not hard to use our system to put a person in Parliament to represent those interests. All it takes is a little bit of work organizing a party before the election.
