Before going forward, I feel I have some things I should probably address before asking people to field questions.
Carson is the name I decided on, and as I pointed out in the other thread, I'm unimaginative, I really like Kevin Carson, and I refuse to try and make it sound better. Carson will be a Mutualist city. Yes, that means NO Government. Read here for a succinct, and easy to understand definition of Mutualism. All the tenets of Mutualism will be highlighted, along with everything that makes Civcraft great. Anything that makes Civcraft bad will be heavily discouraged. The implications of these principles remain to be seen--it's hard to adapt ideas from 'the real world' to a video game. Incentives differ and the framework is not transferable. I'm also not versed in legal theory, so I'll probably need to talk to someone who is.
Generally, what you can expect, is that you will be treated as a human being. Secrets will not be kept from you, lies will not be told about you behind your back, and these principles will be applied universally. A sense of humility and humbleness is expected. Everyone will have a fair shot, and these same qualities should be reflected in how you treat others on the server. If you feel you might have a problem with any of the above, let me know. If you fully achieve this, let me know how you did it, I'm still figuring that part out.
Now for the practical stuff;
Currently, I'm deciding on a location with some people. Input is welcome, but the plan for the actual city is pretty set in stone. I'd like the city to be far (1-2k) from other civilizations, and it must be in the middle of a sizeable ocean. It's preferable that it's either in a mineral vein-rich area, or in vanilla ore distribution.
The plan is to basically make this, but not in a circle. Yes, it will require a lot of work. I like the idea because of it's strategic implications (It's a bit harder to escape than a traditional city format) and the fact that I think it's unique and would be cool as fuck. Imagine being completely surrounded by a waterfall?
Even cooler is the plan to create 'districts'. I'd like to have a district in each cardinal direction that would be underground. So, the inner city area would be completely exposed and planned out, but the districts would be built entirely organically by people, and would be underground. Think of Haven. I think it'd be cool for each district to have it's own theme. Since Carson will be mutualist, that necessarily implies that there be some sort of communal production facilities available for everyone to use. One district could be the production district, chock full of farms, grinders, whatever. Another district could be trade. Another district could be culture and entertainment, which I will get to in a bit. Another district could be superfluous housing. I'm not a dictator, so I can't force people to do these things, I can merely suggest my ideas, and hope people agree with me, and adopt/execute them.
As much as I like sprawling cities, I don't want to see Carson become a huge sprawling city. Communal living will be encouraged (again, I'm not a dictator, so I can't force people to do things), and owning multiple properties will be discouraged, unless you plan on building apartments and renting them out to people. The inner city of Carson will have a limited amount of space because huge sprawling cities make it feel like you're alone in a massive city, even when there's 30 people logged in around you. As nice as it sounds, not everyone needs their own personal space, especially when houses in Minecraft are 95% empty and serve no function other than roleplay. Bringing people together in a small to medium space will drive people closer together. It will also force people to cooperatively build together. We're all friends here, there's no reason we can't both share a house and design it at the same time. Collaborative building would be really cool to see. We can all keep our own private belongings separate still. The idea here is to create social cohesion, and besides, virtually every other city on the server, you can go to and create your own personal building project. This is probably the most radical idea I have for the city, so I'd like any and all feedback. No, I'm not a property-hating Communist, I'm trying to create incentives bring people together, if you think I'm going about it wrong, or there's a better idea, let me know.
Another cool idea I had, was to have canals overtop the inner city streets, with water elevators allowing easy access to the canals from street surface. On each corner of the rectangle, I envision there being towers protruding out of the water/rock allowing for a defensive position. The combination of being sat in the middle of a massive ocean, the strategic implements of the city, and the general design of the city will make it extremely defensible. Griefers be warned, don't fuck with Carson.
As for culture, I'd like Carson to be a city with a rich culture. Culture is what brings people to the city, and keeps them there. Making the city an attractive place to visit is what will keep the city flourishing. Fighting tournaments, spleef tournaments, drama awards, museums, etc, will be greatly encouraged, and I will personally throw in massive amounts of diamonds to see these projects completed.
