Do you master builders have any tips on planning a city?

I see very planned out maps on here all the time and I am wondering how you all do it. Is it an in game feature? Are you all city planners in real life? I am not, so my builds are all over the place. I get high pop ~100k on my main city rn but it’s ugly, all over, I basically just built with what I had. Not on unlimited money so maybe that’s a thing. Just looking for any tips to make it better, ideas for how to set up trains, better public transport system, etc. Any tips very much appreciated!!
