Practical OSPF - a modern, practical training course on OSPF (free, available on Youtube)
Post Body

Hey all,

Lately I've been working on a modern, practical training series covering OSPF. I wanted to share the videos with this community.

  1. Framework & OSPF Packets: LSDB, LSA, Hello, DBD, LSR, LSU, LSAck
  2. Areas and OSPF Types of Routers
  3. Hello Packets :: Area Types :: BDR/DR
  4. Neighbor Adjacency States: DOWN ATTEMPT INIT 2-WAY EXSTART EXCHANGE LOADING FULL
  5. OSPF Demo: Configuration & Show Commands
  6. Designated Router // Backup Designated Router // DR BDR Election
  7. OSPF Costs - How OSPF Calculates it's Cost Metric
  8. Reference Bandwidth - Finding the right reference bandwidth for your network
  9. OSPF LSAs - An overview of Type 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 LSAs
  10. LSA Deep Dive: Type 1 LSAs and Type 2 LSAs
  11. LSA Deep Dive: Type 3 LSAs
  12. LSA Deep Dive: Type 4 LSAs and Type 5 LSAs
  13. Network Types - P2P / Broadcast / NBMA / Point to MultiPoint / PtMP-NB
  14. Area Types - Stub, NSSA, Totally Stub, Totally NSSA
  15. OSPF Demo: Configuring Stub and Totally Stubby areas // BONUS: Opaque LSAs
  16. OSPF Demo: Configuring NSSA and Totally NSSA areas // BONUS: Injecting Default Routes *(releasing 8/22)

The whole series is available with this handy shortlink:

pracnet.net/ospf

It's meant to be a modern, 2022 illustration of OSPF with the goal of communicating practical knowledge about OSPF to give the viewer competent OSPF engineering skills.

There are 16 lessons so far, but if there is enough demand I might extend it with another 4-8 lessons to really cover the full scope of OSPF. To that end... what else would you like to see in this series?
