Help with metaball (DNA Animation)

I'm trying to create a growing DNA kind of animation.
So far I'm using sweeps to create the elongating / growing effect. However, I want the middle strands within the DNA to sort of attach to each other when they meet. I feel a metaball is perfectly suited for such an effect but I can't seem to get it to work with my sweep at all. It just forces the sweep to be at 100% growth and thus I can't keyframe it's growth.
Any help or suggestions?
