Could anyone point me in the right direction with how to achieve this effect?

It's a form of cell division, BUT the big difference is that the cells split in half, not cloned into another copy of itself.
There are so many tutorials on how to use meta-ball and a cloned sphere, but they are not appropriate for this. I explicitly need it to sort of "halve" itself in multiple iterations/directions. Not sure how to do this, and if its some kind of soft body mechanic. Thanks!
