Hey everyone. So I'm in the bariatric surgery process with the end goal of getting a gastric sleeve. The thing is though my surgeon dropped the bomb that he wants me to be in the ICU the day of surgery and the day after (that's the normal hospitalization but he also said it may be longer which also sucks.)
The ICU and I have a long history and it is a major reason why I now have CPTSD. The last time I was there I almost died, lost the ability to walk, lost the ability to eat, and I got a trachesotomy. I was there for a month and a half and then went to sub-acute rehab afterwards to relearn how to walk, eat, and human. So obviously I really don't want to go back. Even walking past the unit without entering is terrifying. Everything in me is also telling me that if I go back in there I won't come back out.
I reached out to my PCP and my ENT (the lady who handles my trach) and they also agree I should go into the ICU after surgery for additional monitoring just to be safe.
The thing is that since everything went to shit I have had 2 surgeries and did not receive any special monitoring to my knowledge. I don't see why everyone is making a big fuss now. If they are worried about extra monitoring why not just put remote telemetry and a pulse ox on me and give the ICU bed to someone who really needs it.
Am I overreacting? Should I just go with the ICU stay even though I am going to be very uncomfortable the whole time?
