How much is known about pre-New Testament baptism?
Post Body

So I kinda get the impression that Christianity didn't "invent" baptism, but rather adopted it - seeing as John's idea of baptism can't have been the same as the modern church's. I see wikipedia mentions Jewish washing rituals, but it doesn't say very much at all.

So - who baptised and was baptised before Jesus came around? What was the meaning and significance of it for Jews? Were there washing rituals before the New Testament that weren't called "baptism"?
